Biographie en français

Vladyslav Lanovoy est professeur adjoint en droit international public à l’Université Laval. Il est également co-président du groupe d’intérêt sur les cours et tribunaux internationaux au sein de American Society of International Law, directeur associé (rédacteur en chef adjoint) de l’Annuaire canadien de droit international, ainsi que rédacteur des recensions d’ouvrages au sein de la revue The Law & Practice of International Courts and Tribunals. Ses recherches portent principalement sur les cours et tribunaux internationaux, les sources et la codification du droit international, la responsabilité des États et des organisations internationales, ainsi que le changement climatique et les réparations.

Avant de rejoindre l’Université Laval en 2021, Vladyslav a été juriste adjoint à la Cour internationale de Justice (2017-2021) et conseiller juridique adjoint à la Cour permanente d’arbitrage (2014). Il a également travaillé en arbitrage international dans un cabinet de premier plan à Londres et à Paris. Vladyslav était auparavant consultant pour le Haut-Commissariat des Nations Unies aux droits de l’homme et le Programme des Nations Unies pour l’environnement à Genève. Plus récemment, il a agi en tant que conseil dans des procédures contentieuses et consultatives devant la Cour internationale de Justice, le Tribunal international du droit de la mer, et dans le cadre d’un arbitrage ad hoc. Il est admis comme avocat (solicitor) en Angleterre et au Pays de Galles.

Titulaire d’un doctorat en droit international (summa cum laude avec félicitations du jury) décerné par l’Institut de hautes études internationales et du développement de Genève, Vladyslav est l’auteur de Complicity and its Limits in the Law of International Responsibility (Oxford : Hart Publishing, 2016), qui a été récompensé par le prix Paul Guggenheim 2017. Ce prix est attribué tous les deux ans à « un jeune chercheur, auteur d’une première monographie de qualité exceptionnelle et susceptible de faire une contribution substantielle à la doctrine du droit international ». Ses recherches ont été publiées dans des revues à comité de lecture de premier plan, notamment le European Journal of International Law, le British Yearbook of International Law et le Leiden Journal of International Law. Il a enseigné le droit international à l’Université Catholique de Lille, Queen Mary University of London et l’Université de Bordeaux. Il est directeur d’études en droit international public (section de langue anglaise) à l’Académie de droit international de La Haye en été 2025.

Né à Lviv, Ukraine, il parle couramment le français et l’anglais, ainsi que l’ukrainien, le portugais, le russe, l’italien, l’allemand et l’espagnol.

Biography in English

Vladyslav Lanovoy is an Assistant Professor of Public International Law at Université Laval. He is also a Co-Chair of the International Courts and Tribunals Interest Group of the American Society of International Law, an Associate Editor of the Canadian Yearbook of International Law, and a Book Review Editor of the Law & Practice of International Courts and Tribunals. His research focuses primarily on international courts and tribunals, sources and codification of international law, the responsibility of States and international organizations, as well as climate change and reparations.

Before joining Université Laval, Vladyslav served as an Associate Legal Officer at the International Court of Justice (2017-2021) and an Assistant Legal Counsel at the Permanent Court of Arbitration (2014). He also worked at the international arbitration group of one of the leading international law firms in London and Paris. Vladyslav had previously consulted for the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Environment Programme in Geneva. More recently, he has acted as counsel in contentious and advisory proceedings before the International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and in an ad hoc arbitration. He is admitted to practice law as a solicitor in England and Wales.

Vladyslav holds a PhD in International Law (summa cum laude avec félicitations du jury) from the Geneva Graduate Institute and is the author of Complicity and its Limits in the Law of International Responsibility (Oxford: Hart Publishing, 2016), which was awarded the 2017 Paul Guggenheim Prize. The prize is awarded every two years to “a young scholar who has written a first monograph of outstanding quality and who is likely to make a substantial contribution to the theory of international law”. His research has appeared in leading peer-review journals, including the European Journal of International Law, the British Yearbook of International Law, and the Leiden Journal of International Law. He has held visiting teaching positions at the Université Catholique de Lille, Queen Mary University of London, and the Université de Bordeaux. He is the Director of Studies in public international law (English-speaking section) at The Hague Academy of International Law in summer 2025.

Born in Lviv, Ukraine, he is fluent in French and English, as well as Ukrainian, Portuguese, Russian, Italian, German and Spanish.
